This study investigates the role played by the conjunction et in the Ciceronian definition of populus: “people is an assemblage of innumerable people associated by a juridical consent and a common utility”. This particle fulfills either an additive or a consecutive function: are “juridical consent” and “common utility” simultaneously constituted in the res publica’s foundation or is there a conditioning anteriority between one another?
