In this article, I propose an analysis of the concept of tolerance based on a dialogue between ethics and hermeneutics. I argue that we can find an important aspect of tolerant man through a hermeneutical look at practical wisdom and its deliberative process. Since its tragic origin, practical wisdom (to phronein) is related to a certain aspect of deliberation that takes into account as much aspects as possible of a given situation to decide for the best practical alternative possible. To analyze this deliberative process, I would like to explore it from a narrative structure. The idea of narrative density captures the multiplicity of narrative threads of a discourse. The greater the number of narrative threads that make up a narrated discourse, the greater the narrative density. I argue that a fundamental aspect of good deliberation is to have a high narrative density, which is, as we shall discuss in this text, also a fundamental trait of tolerant discourse. An intolerant discourse is weak in its deliberative aspect, because it lacks narrative density. By ignoring others in a deficient hermeneutical process, the intolerant deliberates from their single perspective and ignores other expressed priorities, beliefs, arguments, and desires. Narrower narrative deliberation is a relevant linguistic aspect of tolerant man, for it allows him to overcome his fear of the unknown and counterbalance his egocentric tendencies. Philosophical deliberation is therefore an essential step towards the possibility of respecting others. It is a reflection of mutual recognition and also the starting point of tolerant decisions and actions.
