This research seeks to investigate the concept of root metaphor in the conception of Stephen C. Pepper from his work World Hypotheses (1942) and related articles. In addition, extrapolate the concept of root metaphor from a possible interlocution with the philosophical work of scientific knowledge by George Lakoff and Mark Johnson, particularly in Metaphors we live by (1980) and related articles. Considering these objectives, the concept of metaphor in Stephen C. Pepper and in George Lakoff and Mark Johnson was approached, trying to observe how the process of formation of scientific knowledge occurs from these philosophical views that can be considered related
