In this article I intend to examine the cognitive significance Ricoeur attributes to the metaphorical process. In the first part, I will analyse the relationship that M. Heidegger and J. Derrida establish between the movement of metaphysical thought and the mechanism of metaphor construction, then I will dwell upon the objections to their reasoning raised by Ricoeur. In the second part, proceeding from Ricoeur’s hermeneutic viewpoint, I will move on to a presentation of the potential of the metaphorical process in revealing a new dimension of reality, to provide the reader with insight into new world perspectives leading to an understanding of new ethical ways to be-in-the-world.
