The preface that follows was written in the translation from Latin into Italian of the book Universal Law (1722) by Giambattista Vico, published in 1866. The translator and preface, Carlo Sarchi, highlights aspects that he believes to be current, as is the case of the relationship between the concepts of reason and authority and also defends the contemporaneity of Vico's hypothesis on the role of law in the origin of civilization and its composition in antagonistic classes. Sarchi explains that Vico's theory of law is proven by the antiquated character of the law of modern nations. The present translation reproduces the use of uppercase and lowercase in concepts such as in the original, on the other hand, the use of punctuation marks has been changed in important passages so that the text makes sense in Portuguese.
