The Wagnerian total work of art is, for Nietzsche, a magnifying glass from which it will be possible to diagnose the décadence of European arts and societies in general. The Nietzschean diagnosis denotes the tension between the impossibility for modern artists to construct a great art and at the same time to be content with a small art, an ‘art of righteousness’, which would lead, specifically in Wagner's case, to forge the decay in progress. At presenting and considering these aspects, the present article aims to put in discuss some questions related to Wagner/Bizet’s case, showing how the Carmen character can be interpreted from the questions raised by Nietzsche about the “moorish dancing”, opposing it to the excitement caused by the narcotic of the wagnerian drama.
