In A Vindication of the Rights of Men, Mary Wollstonecraft elaborates a response to Edmund Burke’s Reflections on the Revolution in France in terms of an irreducible opposition between justice and the status of aristocratic land property. Among the several effects of the domination that landowners exert over non-owners, one of the most pernicious is the oppression of women, which is legitimized by using the language of sensibility. The article aims to discuss Wollstonecraft’s analysis of the foundations of aristocratic society, casting light on its institutions and moral values.
