This exposition unfolds in a threefold argumentation. Firstly, we introduce the problem of induction, according to Hume’s formulation. The second section discusses the attempt to legitimate inductive reasoning by establishing a principle of induction and, on the other hand, we address some possible objections to the structure and scientific application of this principle. Finally, once explained the underlying problem of trying to establish the empirical status of science by appealing to inductive methods, the third section outlines Popper’s attempt to solve this problem by defending the falsifiability as a criterion for distinguishing empirical science from non-scientific theoretical systems.
