This is a review of the book Pieter Bruegel: le tableau ou la sphère infinie - pour une reforme théologico-politique de l'entendement, by Laurent Bove, published in 2019. The book explores, from a Spinozist point of view, the theme of 'second nature,' which, announced en passant in 1996's La stratégie du conatus: affirmation et résistance chez Spinoza, has gained centrality in his monographs published in the last decade: 2010's Vauvenargues ou le séditieux and 2014's Albert Camus, de la transfiguration. Bove's reading seeks to reconstruct the meaning of the work of Pieter Bruegel the Elder (1525/1530-1569), a Flemish painter from three fundamental axes: historical, artistic, and philosophical. Starting from a problematization of the image of the 'infinite sphere,' as employed in the work of Nicolaus of Cusa, Bove confers a place for Bruegel's painting as philosophical art.
