This work explores some of Thomas Aquinas’ allusions to the Commentary on Aristotle’s Categories by the Neoplatonic philosopher Simplicius, with the purpose of showing that some of the incongruities between Simplicius’ Commentary and Thomas’ interpretation of this text can be explained by the exegesis of the Categories that circulated in the Arts Faculty of Paris University before the translation of Simplicius’ Commentary by William of Moerbeke (ca. 1266). This work focuses on chapter 11 of Aristotle’s Categories and on the first of Aquinas’ Quaestiones de malo, including a discussion of some “puzzling incongruities” highlighted by R. Gaskin, English translator of Simplicius’ Commentary.
